A noun is a word that can occur in certain positions in a sentence or performs certain functions.
Look at this example:
Z ......... is expensive. Any word that can fit into the slot is a noun.
In the sentence " I bought SIMPAINE " the word simpaine is definitely a noun although we do not know whether it is the name of a person, place or thing.Actually, it is not an English word. Yet it is a noun because it is the the object in the sentence.
